What the sea brought to me – a conversation

I went to the beach to find the presents Sea had left after the storm.

That’s interesting, a  little blue hat that belonged to a man of action once.  Too small though.

Tiny black mussels trying to hide.  They need more time so I can not take them.

You have brought  me this before.  I am unimpressed.

I think this is beautiful, thank you but too fragile to travel home with me.

Now you are being silly, I do not need an iron pole.  Where did you get that from?

cropped-p1120919.jpg

A mermaids brush.  Good idea but the handle is broken.

Lol, an orange, there is always an orange.  You have made me laugh, but no thank you.

Your go-to gift.  Normally I would be thrilled, but this one is too tatty. Sorry no.

cropped-img_20170722_023826.jpg

Oh ok, sure, I can put this in the bin for you.

I am tempted, I love pine cones, but Pine tree filled my bag with these the other day.

Hello, nice to meet you.  I am not allowed to take these things.  You know that

cropped-p1120923.jpg

I know you are frustrated, but I have just not found anything suitable.  I will walk a little further.

cropped-img_20170722_024914.jpg

Sigh, it is broken…..

cropped-img_20170722_024908.jpg

…….and this is still in use.

Perfect; I choose this. It is surprisingly light, I catch it’s roughness as I turn it over in my pocket. I have enjoyed my time walking with you sea and thank you for the gift.

Children, remember ‘best find’?  I still play, even though you rarely walk on the sand with me and the sea.  I hope you get to play it again with children of your own.

One of my favorite poems by William Henry Davies

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.
No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

Remember to enjoy the beauty that is all around us.  Go out. Look up.  Look down at least once a week.  The things you find will surprise you.
